Baxandall Big Muff Pi

The daddy of thick, meaty fuzz. Everyone needs some Fluff in their life, but not everyone is a fan of the scooped tone control. Yes, we offer kits with AMZ presence control tone sections with mid-shift, but here's another flavour - a Baxandall tone stack.

OK, yes - we know. It's actually a James tone stack since it's passive, but no-one is going to search for that. Live with it. There are no hard and fast rules about values in this tone set up. One person will love something the next hates, so after some experimentation we've decided on the values from the discontinued Catalinbread™ Manx Loaghtan with a slight tweak. Feel free to substitute your own values to suit.

Kits available for the following versions of this classic:

  • 70's (3rd) version
  • Green Russian
  • Black Russian
  • Civil War Russian
  • Tall Font Green Russian
  • Ram's Head
  • Triangle
  • Violet Ram's Head
  • V3 79#2 (Mascis)
  • Creamy Dreamer
  • Stoned cleric
  • Elk Sustainer (NPN Version)

Mascis model doesn't have the tone bypass that was on the original, but why you wanna bypass the tone? Creamy Dreamer doesn't include the ludicrous power filtering of the original.

What's the difference in the above versions? That's a website all to itself, and whaddayaknow? There IS a fantastic resource on all things Big Muff. Check out Kit Rae's Big Muff Pie page.

The kit is supplied with vertical-mount pots which have round shafts, so you'll need set-screw fitting knobs.

If you want the PCB without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is only available with full kits, and will not take a battery. Knobs are not included.

Builds are only available with full kits including enclosures. Please choose appropriate knobs.

Perfect intro to pedal-building! 5 product stars
"I've been wiring up guitars for years but this was my first ever go at wiring up a PCB. Couldn't have asked for a better first experience- just the right amount and balance of components to help me get to grips with the skills involved, and a really enjoyable few hours soldering it all together. Almost feels like a secondary point that this pedal sounds blinkin' incredible! I went for the Tall Font Russian variant and as promised it sounds huge with both guitar and bass- just thick, creamy fuzz of the highest order. Not sure if I'll ever buy an off-the-shelf pedal again when I can just wire up my own! I'm already plotting my next build..." Steve - 27 February 2021
Creamy Dreamer Muff 5 product stars
"I put together the Creamy Dreamer Muff design, and I am impressed. The Baxandall tone controls are way more useable than the standard Big Muff's. I can get some high end sizzle without sacrificing the low end. Compared with my other Muffs--NYC, Black Russian, Fuzz Dog Civil War-- it definitely has more gain but is a little bit harsher than the Civil War. The Creamy Dreamer design is way better than a standard NYC Muff. Overall, I think this is great for wall-of-sound, guitar fuzz; not better than the Civil War, but different." awkbinoc - 07 March 2020
Fantstic kit ! 5 product stars
"As a bassist, I've build mine with the TFR specs and since I'm a huge fan, I've gone with the value of the ROG Ginger for the tone stack. I really like the result with a ton of very usable tones." Vali - 16 December 2019
A real Siamese Dreamer 5 product stars
"Kit came the day after ordering, 4 hrs, 5 cups of coffee and a couple of soldering burns later, she s up and running! I ordered the V3 Op-Amp version, I m looking for that Smashing Pumpkins sound, and this box of goodness doesn t disappoint, a totally different animal to my Ram s head, sharper, deeper, fuzzier and more alive. This cuts through the mix with a clarity that I was looking for. Good components, easy to follow instructions and great help and communication. Want the Masics next" Scott Murray - 27 October 2018
Green Russian Fuzz wonder 5 product stars
"Short review. It's great. Secondly check out the feedback mod on Kitrae page. That is brilliant - but in using a pot to control feedback go for toggle switch and 100k pot - I went with 1M but only kicks in right at bottom of the sweep. Will be changing to 100k. Really love fuzz dog kits. Mark" Mark - 31 March 2018
Green Russian Big Fluff 5 product stars
"Ordered the Green Russian version of this circuit. An excellent song pedal with many useable tones throughout all ranges of the sustain and tone knobs. Although it has the usual mid cut, to my ears it's not as extreme as other pedals of this nature. It's main attraction is the amazing bottom end, but it still never sounds "woofy" or unusable. Cuts through nicely at gig volumes despite its humongous wall of sound! I highly recommend this pedal." Gareth - 11 March 2018
give me more! 5 product stars
"I went with the Green Russian and it absolutely rocks, I'm already trying to decide on which one to go for next!" kd - 08 June 2017
Tall Font Green Russian 5 product stars
"Awesome! Just finished it, and this thing blows AWAY the Chicago Stompworks Civil War clone I bought last month (for 2x what this kit cost). What front end BOOST this thing has! What tone! You will NOT need a boost after this, it pushes for days! I fucking love this pedal!! Best BM clone I have EVER heard. And... I made it all my little bitty self. Yep. Sho' did." damnedcat777 - 15 April 2017
Big Muff in a Small Box 5 product stars
"The first of many pedalparts builds of mine. Being in love with the Big Muff Pi I was looking to replace my '02 BMP to something with a smaller footprint. While I was at it I was very curious about the Triangle version. Decided to grab the soldering iron a go for it, and what a great decision. The pedal is easy to build, it fits in a standard enclosure and what's most important... sounds absolutely great. Have replaced my original Pi on the pedalboard since then and I couldn't be happier every time I stomp on it." NiLace - 18 February 2017
This is the fuzz you're looking for... 5 product stars
"I'm very particular about bass fuzz sounds - so many that I've tried are too fizzy, or lose too much bottom end and/or definition. But after some careful deliberation, I built the Tall Font Green Russian version of this kit - and it does not disappoint. I can get some almost synth-like fuzz sounds out of it, and cranking it will strip the wallpaper! And most importantly, it'll handle the full range of a 6-string bass admirably without losing anything. If you're not sure which fuzz pedal to go for, buy this one. You will not regret it!" EQD Hoof 5 product stars
"Bought 2 x NPN Hot Germanium for Big Muff from Small Bear and got 2 2n1306 Transistors with Hfe around 300. Sounds fantastic! A bit of leakage doesn't seem to bother this Circuit and it should take a fairly wide variety of NPN Germanium. If you are thinking of trying the Hoof on this PCB do it, Killer Sounds" JPM - 14 April 2016
Green Russian 5 product stars
"I built the Green Russian and it is a great kit, really nice quality gear. Sounds really cool, much better than I was expecting for the price. I will definitely be buying another kit in the future." Nick C - 29 June 2015
Great Pi 5 product stars
"This was my first build for a FuzzDog kit and I could not be more happy with it. I found the instructions straight forward and easy to follow. I went with the civil war variant and find it to be a very versatile pedal with great tone. I did hit one snag during the build but it was due to a faulty power adapter. So make sure you double check your adapter and polarities. Bottom line, this is a great pedal." Tom - 23 September 2014
A very little Big Muff 4 product stars
"I've built three of these now - A Civil War from the kit and two homebrews on the PedalParts PCB - A violet Ram's Head and a V6. The parts count is high, but it's a straightforward build. Nothing too fiddly and the PCB is well laid out. The finished board will just fit in a Hammond 1590B with room for a battery. Routing the wiring for the knobs is the fiddliest bit, and is easier if you use solid-core wire. The kit is comprehensive and uses high quality components. The resulting pedal sounds fantastic, and having a choice of build specs is really good - they do all sound quite different." John Roberts - 24 June 2013
Excellent muff kit 5 product stars
"This pedal sounds fantastic at a great price. Compared to other ridiculously priced vintage muff clones it's a steal." Big Eck - 19 March 2013
