FuzzPup Big Muff Pi

This is part of our FuzzPup range of circuits designed for 1590A builds. Please read the general build doc available here and ensure you're happy with what's involved. They're not especially difficult, but working in a confined space can be fiddly. Take heed. This kit is especially tight so you must be absolutely 100% happy with tight work to take it on.

Of course there's nothing stopping you using these PCBs for 'standard' builds. They're Direct Connect compatible.

A different PCB is available for 'standard' 1590B builds - see the related products listed below.

The daddy of thick, meaty fuzz. Everyone needs some Fluff in their life. Now you can have it in a teeny 1590A package.

Kits available for the following versions of this classic, with more to be added soon:

  • 70's (3rd) version
  • Green Russian
  • Black Russian
  • Civil War Russian
  • Tall Font Green Russian
  • Ram's Head
  • Triangle
  • Violet Ram's Head
  • V3 79#2 (Mascis)
  • Creamy Dreamer
  • Stoned cleric
  • Elk Sustainer (NPN)

Mascis model doesn't have the tone bypass that was on the original, but a Muff without Muff tone is no Muff at all. Creamy Dreamer doesn't include the ludicrous power filtering of the original.

NOTE: Kits are supplied with 0.125W resistors, which are tiny. Any of the kits that require 1uf capacitors will be supplied with multi-layer ceramic as film caps are too deep.

What's the difference in the above versions? That's a website all to itself, and whaddayaknow? There IS a fantastic resource on all-things-Fluff. Kit Rae's Page is a great resource.

All this fuzzy fun in a 1590A enclosure.

Comes with a separate daughterboard to easily mount the pots to the main PCB.

Pots have round shafts so you'll need set-screw fitting knobs. Pot spacing is 18mm.

Note: Images showing completed PCBs with pots attached and in-situ in the enclosure are general FuzzPup pics so you can see how they fit together.

If you want the PCB without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as an option with full kits, and will not take a battery. Knobs are not included.

Inspired by: Lots of Big Muff Pi variants

PCB size: 30 x 50mm

Tiny but vicious box of doomtone (JMascis mod) 4 product stars
"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXqdgOuXOBE demo video of the finished pedal, showing the wide sweep of tones it offers. A couple of tiny issues: 1. One of the 100nf capacitors was missing, or more likely, I lost it on my workbench. I've built around 20 Pedalparts kits and I've never had a missing part so benefit of the doubt. 2. One of the caps was a different rating to what's stated in the docs - it wasn't a 3n9 but something close to that. 3. The jack sockets supplied were standard jack sockets, not Lumberg KLBM-3 1/4" sockets, and I couldn't fit them in the kit with the standard drilling template, so I had to order some from Farnell. These came next day so no big deal. Despite these niggles, the build was as fun as ever, I find it very soothing! Docs were easy to follow, although the website states "New doc on the way. BOMs are identical to the previous INSTRUCTION PDF". Took me about 3 hours total including drilling etc. I think I say the enclosure is a 1590B in the video, but it's a 1590A, which is about half the width of a "normal" 1590B guitar pedal enclosure. Tone-wise, it goes from shrill and fizzy to boomy bass; there is a LOT of sweep. Gain gets raunchy VERY fast. If you want a wall of sound, or a fuzzed-out lead, this is a great pedal. _Now if only I could play even 1% as well as Mascis!_

Perfect Little Muff 5 product stars
"This is my second FuzzPup, and they aren't nearly as difficult to build as I thought they'd be. It can be annoying having to squeeze things in when you're boxing them up, but I didn't have to take any drastic measures to fit everything together. Sound wise, I've never had an OG Green Russian so I can't comment on how it compares, but this thing sounds FANTASTIC, and has the exact tone I was looking for when listening to Green Muff demos. My only other Muff circuit is a FD Engorged Gherkin (Swollen Pickle) and they cover completely different bases: when I want insta Muff, I go to this, and when I'm going for a tone that needs to be fine tuned, I go the Gherkin, so they compliment each other quite well." It must be muff 5 product stars
"It may be a tiny PCB but it's got all the balls of the original circuit (and it's many variations). If it's good enough for Jack White, Dave Gilmour, J Masics, Billy Corgan, Thurston Moore, Fan Auerbach, The Edge and Stuart Braithwait, it reckon it's good enough for us mere mortals. You can't go wrong" Martin Samuels - 12 May 2023
Unbelievable 5 product stars
"Very good indeed. If you want a proper BMP sound in a tiny box, and you don't mind using a magnifying glass or a nimble fingered servant, this is the kit for you. I have the 1979 IC BMP which is far smoother, somehow less aggressive than this one (Violet Ram), This fizzes around the edges, in a good way, and makes for some slightly less predictable roughness. This is not a pedal for complex chord voicings, but it certainly is a pedal for straight up doom/sludge/filth/dumb-rock. Buy two." Steve - 17 February 2018
