Super Fuzz - Univox / Shin-Ei Companion Fuzz FY6

Earplugs at the ready for this one. Massive uncompromising octave-up fuzz.

Shin-Ei's high-gain fuzz box was made under many guises in the 70s, the most famous probably being their own FY6, and Univox's Super Fuzz.

Want Pete's Live at Leeds wall-of-guitar? Or the thicker end of Poison Ivy's sound? Look no further.

There's much debate about the best transistors to use in this circuit, but really it comes down to personal taste. The FuzzDog lab was locked down for countless hours while socketing and comparing was done. In the end our ears liked the high-gain results from 6 x 2N5088. It can be tamed a bit with 2N2222 or BC107, but this pedal is NOT about tame. It is about huge fuzz.

PCB features:

  • Trim pot for dialling in the octave signal just-so
  • Optional board-mounted diode selection switch
  • Spots for two sets of clipping diodes

If you want to save a couple of quid go for BAT46 in place of the germanium clipping diodes. They sound exactly the same.

Beware - this is not a quiet circuit. Such massive gain means inevitable hiss and fizz. Not too much, but its there. With the amp cranked and strings muted you will likely get some hiss.

The kit is supplied with vertical-mount pots which have round shafts, so you'll need set-screw fitting knobs.

If you want the PCB without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as an option with full kits, and will not take a battery. Knobs are not included.

Builds are only available with full kits including enclosures. Please choose appropriate knobs.

Univox Superfuzz 5 product stars
"Love love love this pedal went with all the options and not disappointed with this little beast...straightforward build as usual, great build guide from Fuzzdog and service again top notch as always. Push this pedal into a slightly overdriven amp.. valve or solidstate and enjoy thick fat fuzz on one setting and a thinned out tone on the other, both extremely interactive and lots of fun..enjoy.

John Mayer fans, this is the mystery pedal for I Guess I Just Feel Like 5 product stars
"I have had a fair few pedal to build now. I got this specifically for the song mentioned in the title. This thing is a beast. I went with all the available options and I also broke out the octave. Took me a good few hours to build but I do work slow. Lots of range in tones with diodes and tone switch as well as the octave pot. Customer service first class as always." Matt - 05 March 2023
I can see what the fuss is all about 5 product stars
"I guess this does the Townshend Live at Leeds thing (though, of course, he's only using it for solos there, so don't expect to sound like the rythm guitar parts), but it also does a nice Type O Negative thing on the flat setting and a Paranoid era Black Sabbath thing on the mid-hump setting. It's also got a very nice octave effect going on around the 12th fret. This is sufficiently different for all you fuzz freaks to justify getting a new one, IMHO. FWIW, if I'd buy this again today I'd leave the diode switch option out. To my ears it doesn't add much to the circuit: it sounds very, very close to how the Ge diodes do, but with a volume drop. I'd just avoid the extra work of soldering the extra diodes and switch." Razvan - 29 July 2021
Great for Guitar and Bass 5 product stars
"Built this for a friend and it has turned their world upside down. No finicky bits, easy to dial in tone that sounds like death (in a good way), and a very simple build. A" Placebo Farm - 21 August 2020
No idea 1 product stars
"My wife bought me this as a present. Pain in the backside. It's now in a box forgotten about. The diodes got fried, I bought more diodes, they got fried. Some of the caps got fried. My personal experience was terrible. I have a nice solder station but this was just misery. Sorry but no, not a good experience." Lex Baxter - 04 September 2019
Fave fuzz to date 5 product stars
"My friend built me this in the UK and brought it over to the States. Hands down my favorite fuzz sound. Not especially noisy, tons of tones and amazing fuzz. It does the fizzle-out thing (as it's supposed to) so it doesn't sustain forever like a Big Muff - other than that it's extraordinary. Has this uncanny modulation-sounding effect as the harmonics sweep in and out. Great job Fuzz Dog!" Timdonderevo - 31 August 2018
Super fuzzy fuzz!!! 5 product stars
"I bought this pedal as a Big Muff Pi Superfuzz combo but now I moved it into a stand alone enclosure as this fuzz is freaking awesome. Is dark yet bright. Is like a wild horse, no matter how you tweak your guitar volume, this animal will scream the same. I made the 8th trim pot a external knob in order to have more versatility. It well could be an ON/OFF switch as is the way I like it (all or nothing). Anyway, I am having a second honey moon with this effect, once when I mixed with the big muff (nice dual pedal for Mudhoney fans, but not very useful) and now when I made a single effect pedal with the 8th control knob. Love it the same I love all products I bought here." Javi - 18 January 2016
ROAAAR 5 product stars
"This is an amazing fuzz. Dirty but cuts through like butter. Doesn't respond especially well (or let's say not the classic way) to the volume pot on my system, thins out but in itself that is an interesting sound actually and I find myself using it more and more. Love love love this fuzz. The slight octave (make sure you dial it in using the trim pot) is just what's needed to make it a bit different, and with the trimpot all the way down you can get a really good gated, splattery type of fuzz. The diode switch provides another tone, in my case I found one had more output and body. And the tone switch, like in the original provides an almost completely different sound altogether, scooped and metallic. Again, a great kit from Fuzzdog, get it!!!" Francois - 23 August 2015
Some new kind of kick 5 product stars
"This was my first build, and when it arrived I was surprised how small the PCB was and worried I wouldn't manage. However, after watching a couple of youtube 'how to solder' vids I got stuck in and all was fine. I put the diode in the wrong way round , which went into smoky oblivion at the battery test stage(I emailed Lee and he got straight back to me), but otherwise it was great fun and surprisingly straightforward just following the instructions. Tips: 1. paint the box before assembly - obvious I know but so much easier. 2. Put the diode in the right way! (striped end in square pad). Results - Fan--feckin'-tastic. I've got an original superfuzz, but it's too nickable and the switch is glitchy so it stays in the house. This build is a very faithful clone. Turn the trim pot all the way up and let the waves of fizzing spitting fuzz roll!" BlueLou - 06 March 2014
terrifying 5 product stars
"Absolutely the MOST scary fuzz pedal I've ever heard, which doesn't mean bad, oh no, not at all. Quite the reverse. If you want something which cuts through anything on single notes this is your thing. As long as you don't mind tearing a few people's eyes out in the process. If you want the most bone crunching riffs possible, this is probably also your thing. As long as you don't mind making a few people's guts hurt in the process. If you want to be able to hear the individual notes within chords using more than two strings, forget it. Get something nice. This isn't nice. It's amazing." grievobelievo - 22 May 2013
