Sunny-T - cranked Sunn Model T tones

Who wouldn't like a Sunn Model T in their set-up? Bet you can't name one person. If you can, unfriend them immediately as they have no taste. No sir.

Well, truth is you're probably not getting one any time soon, so have yourself a little box of dirt to get you in the mood.

Now, we can't vouch for how close this gets to that elusive tone, but this power amp-based distorting doohicky sounds real good, and is a lot more versatile than you might expect from a one-knob-job (yes - you can have the kit with two knobs if you prefer - we just like the term 'one knob job'). Your guitar volume control is your friend here, and the Sunny-T will respond nicely to some twiddling, from low-gain dirty grit to all-out 'please turn it down!' speaker melt.

Keep it simple with volume control only, or add a a gain control to the circuit input, which will act just like your guitar volume. There are extra pads for the pots so the one-knob version has it centralised, two knob has them exactly where you'd expect, and all board mounted to boot.

If you want the PCB without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as an option with full kits, and can take a battery if desired with footswitch positioned 22mm higher, closer to the controls. Knobs are not included.

Builds are only available with full kits including enclosure. Please choose appropriate knobs.

"First ever pedal build. Not completely new to soldering having replaced pickups, modding an old cassette recorder and what not - but definitely not that experienced. This was a really fun build, straightfoward and hassle free. The one thing I'd say is actually pay attention and read the (excellent) instructions - I screwed up a couple of times - basically because I didn't read the instructions properly. Really satisfying once built and sounds phenomenal. I've tried the EQD version before I really don't think there's much if any difference in the sound - both proper hardcore - the benefit of this one being a) It's much cheaper b) You get the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself, and you understand how the circuit works. Brill." Nick - 09 October 2023
Does this have a volume mod? 4 product stars
"Cause its way too loud. Otherwise it sounds brilliant." Justin - 21 March 2021

"This is my first kit from Fuzzdog but not my last. I haven't done any serious soldering for a few years but assembly was fast and easy. The kit itself was very well packaged and shipped quickly. When I ordered this kit I was after a heavy sludgy fuzzy mess of a distortion suitable for doom or stoner type tones and that's exactly what I got. Even with the gain turned down this is a dirty sounding pedal. With the gain on full (as it should be) it's downright filthy. Even through the minute Blackstar Fly 3 this pedal sounds huge. Highly recommended." Ashleigh Ellingworth - 08 December 2020

"Kit arrived within a few days of ordering. I had a few questions that got answered with 20 minutes of sending the email. Excellent customer service. Straight forward build. Sounds like a sludgy distorted horrible mess, which is just the sound I was going for. Well worth the money. Very pleased with the tone. Just looking for the next kit now." Stephen Hannam - 29 September 2020
Yup. I needed this. 5 product stars
"This thing is siiick. I did the one knob version. The distortion is heavy, powerful, and loud! The volume knob on your guitar really helps things out here. I'd like to build the two knob version, but for now I'm going to keep chugging away. Buy the daughter board. Buy the ribbon. Be happy." Travis - 09 October 2019
Great kit, great pedal 5 product stars
"Great quality kit. Very straightforward build using the fuzzdog daughter board for the switch. Sounds great, I went for the two knob and the extra control is useful. Cheers!" Luke - 13 October 2018

"...HAF. Heavy As F . That's all you need to know. Buy one. Build it - don't forget the extra Gain control pot. Plug it. Play it. Feel awesome. Play it again. Feel like a face-melting-god. It's this good." Ricardo - 03 August 2017
Beast! 5 product stars
"made the 2 knob version. this thing is thick! a nice beefy doomy drive. definitely surprised when i cranked this thing." Bill - 09 July 2017
"Turn it down!" Which knob does that then? 5 product stars
"Do I play this for fun or enter the demolition trade? Keep this pedal away from foundations as it will worry them a bit! Nice range of sounds available from this and not just scope for endless darkened riffs of eternal punishment into 'a sunless sea', but that is an option if not a prerequisite with this little delight. I opted for the gain control and I'm glad because it adds an extra control dynamic that I can zoom in at the end of a song just to make things a bit more crushing and be louder than everybody else - yay! Sludge/Doom can spring from this at max, but it's well equipped to offer gentler classic rock styles too and does with one (or two) knob version - just turn back the volume to find your sound & things loosen up a little. Yep it's nice, thick, dynamic and fuzzy. I think my red knobs choice make it sound a bit heavier." Guy - 01 June 2017
Strange 5 product stars
"If somebody can tell me why my pedal is playing song when my guitar's volume is turned down. Seriously, I'm hearing spanish or italian songs through my amp ! WTF ?????" Valentin - 08 November 2016

"LOUD!! When I first used the pedal I felt like Michael J Fox in the begining of Back to the Future. Incredible tone! Great kit, great pedal. The daughter card is a must." Rich - 17 September 2016

"Ps. I'm gonna get a daughterboard and ribbon cable every time now, it's so much better, neater and easier. Get one peeps!" Mick Jones - 31 August 2016
Ouch that's bloody nice... 5 product stars
"I built the one knob version as I thought it would be interesting to control the gain with my guitar and home made volume pedal. It's up to you there, but I'm happy with this. Very happy! The distortion this creates is perfect for heavy doom bringing chugging, but arpeggios and the like sing too. It is beautifully obscene, I'm gonna have a lot of fun with this. Thanks Lee, you're the man. (Gonna build a Klone next I hope, I'm a bit schiz and this shows in my playing, going from a gorgeous overdriven tone to this sonic perversion is perfect for me). Hahaha. I like this. Thanks mate :-)" Mick Jones - 31 August 2016
Remarkably versatile 5 product stars
"I bought this expecting to get a full on Sunn O))) signal destroying fuzz, and it doesn't disappoint; but there's a lot more to it than that. Built the two knob version, which I highly recommend as the gain pot is very useful for attenuating hotter pickups to preserve your playing dynamics and find that 'sweet spot' for your volume controls to give you the sweep you want. At full tilt you get all the insane fuzzy doom you'd expect from this unit, but it's at lower volumes that things get interesting. Capo on 5th fret with volume turned down about halfway on my Firebird playing with my fingers and I get some really funky organ type sounds. Turn the volume down a little more and really dig in with my pick and I get some vintage rock crunch. Lots to be had out of it, all controlled from your fingertips. Worth experimenting with ICs in my opinion. I found that the LM386 N1 in position 1 and the LM386 N3 in position 2 opened up the circuit and preserved the integrity of my bass notes without losing too much of that low end saturation. Your mileage may vary, but that's what sockets are for! Great kit, super happy. Went straight in the board." Ben Miles - 14 August 2016
Tune low, play loud 5 product stars
"Most crushing and heavy distortion I haven't heard for a while. Get instantly into Kyuss/stoner rock territory. Built the one knob version, make sure you get LM386 N1 for accurate sound. Play it through a dirty Orange Micro Terror and PPC112 cab. This is beautiful, thank you FuzzDog" Chuck - 16 May 2016
...but...but... 5 product stars
"...but... there's not enough stuff inside this thing to make it sound so MASSIVE. Is there? I have the one knob version, trusting the Fuzzdog's ideal that the gain should simply be ON rather than having, you know, shades and whatever. Here's the thing with this pedal: do you like harmonically rich and super-saturated distortion? Do you like the more DOOM end of heavy music? Are you someone who could consider your music SLUDGE, RIFFY, DOOM, STONER? If so then you need to either check out the second hand market for proper massive 1970s valve heads and cabs to match, or get this pedal kit and learn to solder. It took me half an hour to build this (I've done quite a few of these kits so I've had a head start, but still, that's pretty swift) and it's cheap as chips. It'll cheer you up in equal measure to how much it depresses your drummer when he or she realises that you're now the louder one in the room (there is SO much volume in this thing, it's terrifying). Fuzzdog, you've done it. You've broken me. This time I mean it: I don't think I need another distortion pedal. For a while." steve - 30 March 2016
