Ruby / Noisy Cricket Mini Guitar Amp

Based on the magnificent work of RunOffGroove, the Ruby circuit can kick out some serious oomph depending on your choice of speaker. All from a little 9V battery or 9V DC supply (can be supplied with 12V if you really want to push it).

Some clever jiggery-pokery over at Beavis Audio gave birth to a highly modded Ruby, dubbed the Noisy Cricket. This adds a tone control and a 'grit' switch to give it a little more break-up.

To be honest the tone control doesn't cut much mustard over at FuzzDog HQ. Our recommended configuration is Noisy Cricket without Tone. The grit control is a must.

Will drive pretty much any speaker with different dynamics depending on size/impedence. A Marshall 4x12" goes from fairly loud clean to louder with decent break-up. A little 4" speaker went from crunchy to full-on screaming.

This new version of the kit is designed for board-mounted pots 9mm pots, which means there's a lot more wiggle room in the enclosure. Perfect for putting together an amp-head style layout in a 1590B enclosure with room for a battery.

If you want to keep things really simple just go for the Ruby, which has no tone at all, just Vol and Gain, but the Grit switch is a nice addition.

Note: the board-mount 9mm pots have round shafts, so keep that in mind when choosing your knobs. You'll need some that fix with a set screw. Pot spacing is 18mm so take that into account too. Small knobs here please.

We're also offering the kit with 16mm pots if you want to do your own enclosure layout and wire the pots to the PCB. Please note: NO ENCLOSURE OPTION for the wired pots. Save us all some time and please do not choose an enclosure if you've also chosen wired pots. The world will be a bleaker place.

Enclosure (if chosen) will be drilled to suit the options you've chosen.

Astonishingly good sound for so few components
"My wife's amplifier was broken so I took it apart and fixed it. And it worked! But then it blew up. So I built a new amp based on the simple "Ruby amp" using Fuzzdog's Ruby Cricket PCB. It's a surprisingly musical amp given how few components it has - and incredibly loud given it's running off a 9v battery! The build is very straightforward. It's also versatile - you can add an LED and power switch, no problem. I have driven 4 ohm and 8 ohm speakers with this amp. I even tried it with a PA system speaker and it was LOUD! Amazingly good
"My original plan for this was to use it for driving a reverb tank. But when I tested it through a 412 just to check if everything worked, it turned out to deliver everything I want from a practice/recording amp. So I'll have to get another one and build a miniature combo" Anders - 09 June 2019

Builder's Little Monster
"This tiny thing has more roar than you think! Beautiful clean and just right gritty tone. Super helpful for us pedal builders and also a no brainer if volume is an issue (your neighbors and kids can sleep tight now). Surprisingly rocking
"This little guy puts out more volume and tone than it has any right to. It does a nice range of clean and crunch sounds. You can get smooth distortion with humbuckers as long as you don't turn everything to 11. Lots of fun. The board-mounted version is a fast, easy build with a clean layout that leaves plenty of room for a battery." StumbleFingers - 12 May 2015
