Pink Plexi Distortion

Clone of a famous purple Marshall-in-a-Box pedal. Dial up some crazy high-gain crank in a very small package.

Volume control does what it says, though we offer the kit with a Log pot if you want to make it much better than the original. Frequency offers a good range of filtering to tune the tone just-so. Unfortunately the Gain control could just as well be a toggle switch. You'll get very little change across most of the turn, then a shed-load of gain in the last few degrees. This is a design flaw in the original, but after much experimentation it has proved impossible to make much of an improvement. Embrace it or move along. That being said you can opt for our modded version which will uses Reverse Log instead of linear.

Another warning - this is not a quiet circuit. Some noise may be present if playing gently or with the guitar volume wound back. 'Tis the nature of the beast. Who's going to play this quietly though? This is hard-rock/metal through and through.

The kit is supplied with vertical-mount pots which have round shafts, so you'll need set-screw fitting knobs.

If you want the PCB without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as an option with full kits, and can take a battery if desired with footswitch positioned 22mm higher, closer to the controls. Knobs are not included.

Builds are only available with full kits including enclosure and vertical-mount pots. Please choose appropriate knobs.

Definitely do the Volume mod! 4 product stars
"Great fun saturated overdrive. A little spongey at times, but maybe what they're going for. Definitely do the volume mod mentioned in the build instructions with R8 as 33K instead of 330R and a log instead of linear pot. I also increased C7 to 150 or 200n (I socketed so I could easily try other values). Otherwise, the pedal was too bright for my ear, and since the FREQ pot boosts bass as well as rolling down treble, it got too bassy if I just turned down the FREQ (tone) control." Bright through a Fender 4 product stars
"I found this a little bright through a fender and since the tone control adds bass while cutting highs it was hard to get the right balance. I changed C6 to 10nF and it made all the difference! Now I love it, so much fun, handles single coils better and very dynamic when boosted with a clean boost or tubescreamer." James - 02 October 2020

"This is probably the best kit I have made and sounds superb with every guitar I have , around 20, and in front of amps from super clean Fenders to Marshalls. The only change I made was the volume pot from linear to log which gives better control. I have a Marshall jubilee which I use mainly on red channel for blues and kick in the pink plexi for that extra gain stage which is sonic heaven. An easy build, definitely worth every penny." "I ordered this expecting it to sound a bit like the purple plexi from lovepedal after watching the (really very good) video on the Lovepedal website (its worth looking it up). What I got was a fun hour of making it, and a pedal that sounded exactly like the PP - not close but spot on. The od goes from light through to 'bloody hell'. You can back off your volume or pick lightly to get less dirt. And its less than 30. 10/10, big tick, and a gold star. Plus the owner Lee is a nice helpful chap." Anthony - 03 January 2014
Metal. So much metal... 4 product stars
"Wow. That's a lot of distortion! If you want some serious hard rock, this is the one. The kit is a doddle and the board is teeny - might even go in a 1590A. I've tweaked mine with a 'C' taper drive pot and a different chip, and it's sounding great. The gain starts where most overdrives leave off - think Angus Young in a quiet mood - and goes up right into the metal zone. We are talking Motorhead, W.A.S.P, Judas Priest, etc. It can't really do a proper scooped thrash sound, though. Overall, pretty impressive. Ideal for a covers band needing a pedal for occasional metal moments." John Roberts - 03 November 2013

"very good pedal build, sounds great, its a Marshall in a box!!" James - 10 August 2013
Proper 5 product stars
"Proper distortion, and seriously loud. Terrifying. If a normal, bright, loud distortion is good for you, get one of these kits. If you like your mess messier, build a Greasy Tool too and stick it at the front in your pedal chain. Bang! Loud AND mental. Brilliant." Steve - 08 May 2013
Plexi 5 product stars
"THE best sounding distortion I have ever heard. Plenty of available volume boost. I use it in front of my jcm 900 for a lead boost. Turn the drive control all the way up and it sounds like a wall of plexi stacks wide open. Tube screamer was my go to, but not anymore. The kit was totally complete and easy to build. I'm building another one for a back up. Thanks guys" Joel King - 08 December 2012
