Moon Phaser

Who doesn't like a bit of phase fun? Yeah, not many hands up. Who likes sorting through a shed load of FETs to match them up to get that phasing fun to work? Still no hands. Of course, we do the hard FET-matching work for you here at FDHQ anyway, but here's a nice phaser that does all the magic with OTAs instead of FETs. No matching, no biasing - it just works...

There's a whole lot of circuit to cram into a 1590B, so we've had to design the PCB for 3mm resistors. They're a bit fiddly, but needs must. You can use standard 6mm resistors if you're happy to mount them vertically. There's no shame in that.

Four pots control your Speed, Depth, Resonance and Sweep. Your Rate toggle switch selects between fast, slow and none, the latter giving you a fixed resonant filter. The second toggle selects Phaser or Vibe mod, the latter cutting the dry signal altogether. In this mode the Depth pot acts as a volume control.

All in all a very satisfying phaser without the fiddly fuss.

The kit is supplied with vertical-mount pots which have round shafts, so you'll need set-screw fitting knobs.

If you want the PCB without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as an optio with full kits, and will not take a battery. Knobs are not included.

Perfection!! 5 product stars
"I've been searching for some time for that Frampton esqu 70s vibe sound. I've tried about 4 different circuits from various DIY pedal kit suppliers, none have quite cut the mustard. Until now! This is it, the very sound I've been craving for years! I've build probably 50 effects pedals now in the last 5 or 6 years, and this is definitely my favourite. To the moon!! Simply awesome.

"I own an original one of these and if there is a difference between the two, its very subtle. If anything, I prefer the clone because my original one has a footswitch that pops! The build itself is a little bit fiddly, but only because there's a lot to fit in the enclosure. Think carefully about the order in which you solder the pots and socket the ICs, there's not a lot of room to get a soldering iron in once you put the ICs in! Well worth the effort though, and other than patience there was no special skill required." Sam Stevenson - 13 November 2021

"Fantastic phase fun, went for the smaller resistors and had no trouble what-so-ever. Would definitely recommend, best phaser I've heard in a very long time. 6/5" Xavier - 04 October 2021

"It's a challenging kit, so make sure you allocate your time accordingly. I went for the smaller resistors option and they did not cause me any trouble (except for the sheer number of them to go through!). In my kit one of the polarised capacitors was replaced by a non-polarized one, no problem with that but it confused me for a minute. Due to the relatively compact size of the PCB a couple of places required some extra lead bending - plan one step ahead and you will be fine. I also used the Ultra Tester kit to test once the main PCB was done - no issues whatsoever, and the sound generator sounded quite fun with some phase shifting. IC sockets are a brilliant touch - no worrying about overheating the components. I haven't discovered all the sound options this pedal gives, but it already makes mere practicing of pentatonic scale more enjoyable!" Den - 04 September 2021
Totally fun! 5 product stars
"Fun to build, fun to play. The most meticulous pedal I've made so far, and SO many components. Tight board, but that meant I had to be at my best. I chose to use the 6 mm resistors and vertically mount, which wasn't too bad but was definitely "fiddly". In terms of playability, bought this for my guitar and it sounds great (I appreciate pedals that gradually go from subtle to silly). BUT...never tried a phaser on my bass before and loved this one. Bass players complain about phasers losing low end, but that isn't my impression of this. Several "sweet spots" for my bass so far, and looking forward to exploring more. FuzzDog has all my favorite pedal builds (Glam, Juicy Blue, Engineers Thumb, Deep Vibes all great projects with great sound). Several more already lined up!" Jason (Chicago) - 05 August 2021

"This is a good easy build and a really fun oedal to use, either as a phaser or vibrato. On one half of a stereo rig this would be astonishing in vibrato mode. There are tons of usable sounds from the subtle to the ridiculous in this wee box. Highly recommended." Nick C - 22 July 2021
