Hype-R Rat

This pedal has been getting a lot of hype, and you know what? It's pretty darn good.

Yes, It's essentially a tweaked Rat with bunting and bells on, but those tweaks do give it a different flavour to your standard Rodent-based box.

Includes an on-board charge pump to run things at 18V from your standard supply, giving lots of headroom and different dirt dynamics than your 9V Rat. You can wire it up for true bypass, or use the integral buffered bypass if you want to keep it closer to the original, though we haven't included relay switching. NOTE: You can't wire it as buffered bypass if using the OptoPuss. Nor can you use a ribbon if doing this with a standard daughterboard.

The kit is supplied with vertical-mount pots which have round shafts, so you'll need set-screw fitting knobs.

If you want the PCB without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as an option with full kits, and will not take a battery. Knobs are not included.

Builds are only available with full kits including enclosures. Please choose appropriate knobs.

Big fat distortion, but does the 'cut' nob do anything? 4 product stars
"This is a big, fat loud distortion pedal, that is a based on that 80s drives that everyone seemed to go buts about for 6 months..I spent a bit on it using a Gorva switch and an 1054 chip for better charge pump response..my only gripe, the 'cut' nob is quite subtle. I basically ads mids and bass, but not in large doses?? Maybe I screwed up that tone stack, it's doing something, but nothing remarkable..! Otherwise, the Volume and drive nobs add masses on volume and distortion, good for Motorhead type tones!" Ozzie Battla - 23 August 2021
It's almost a rat, but...not 4 product stars
"If you like to boost your rat, you'll like this. For the last month I've had this side by side with a Rat clone, and they cover very similar ground. Differences are 1; The tone control has a wider useful range at all gain settings - whereas with the rat, as the gain goes down the filter knob basically needs to be turned up in proportion, the Hype-R gives you thick and bright without being muffled or ice-picky. 2; It's more compressed, on account of the extra gain stage over a rat. 3; the minimum gain setting is equivalent to about 9pm on a rat gain knob, and beyond half way it holds together better than the rat which fuzzes and flubs out and 4; the overall eq has more midrange push, which may or may not be preferable depending on your rig and tastes. For me, I decided that Rat clone was more versatile and dynamic, and I can just boost it with something else from my board if I want (Klon into Rat is pretty amazing!) But this is a pedal worthy of the hype, nonetheless." Josh - 01 February 2021
Living up to the Hype 5 product stars
"Great kit which sounds great. I chose to install a DPDT to change between buffered and true bypass which went very easily between the PCB and the jack's if you use the drilling template or a pre-drilled enclosure" Xavier - 10 May 2020
