FlatLine Compressor

John Hollis' relatively low parts count optical compressor. This fits in between the 'is it on' and 'super squished' camps. With the sustain control dialled back you have approx 3X gain between soft and hard signal, fully dialled you have 20X which makes the output super flat and incredibly sustained.

Utilises a NSL-32 optocoupler rather than risk the vaguery of rolling-your-own LED/LDR combo. We've also replaced the germanium diodes with BAT46. The end result is identical and the diodes are a much tighter spec than their vintage cousins.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is only available with full kits, and can take a battery if desired with footswitch positioned 22mm higher, closer to the controls. Knobs are not included.

Fab compressor! 5 product stars
"Build was generally easy. A diode was missing from the kit but was not required anyway. Help from the Fuzzdog Facebook group was quick, easy and accurate. The parts all seem to be great quality, the potentiometers seem particularly nice in their action. I would say the Gorvo switch is also excellent, and well worth the upgrade. The daughter board for the switch was a design masterstroke, much easier to use all round, and the ribbon connector makes life even easier and is much neater. The drilling of the enclosure (which was bought elsewhere) was quick and made stress free by the excellent template provided in the online instructions. I would recommend a set of Step Drills for this task. The sound from the unit is so good, it has revolutionised my Slide Guitar playing almost instantly. The two controls make adjustments a doddle, so great as a first Compressor. Good soldering skills are required however, so some practice will be necessary if this is not your bag.
