Emperor Dual Overdrive

New for September 2024. Due to absolutely no demand we're now offering two different sets of daughterboards. Our design runs the channels from left to right, like how we read, yeah? Makes sense. The original pedal runs right to left. You could swap directions with some fiddly wiring, which isn't ideal, so there are now daughterboards that'll do just that, run channel B into channel A. Select your desired signal path in the options below.

Who doesn't love a Blues Breaker? What about a highly modified BB with magic beans for diodes and some fine tweaking to make it oh-so-sweet? Now put two in a box and hold on tight.

Y'all know what this is based on so no need to go into too much detail. We've board-mounted everything but the jacks and DC socket on this to make it as neat as can be.

There's a lot of debate on how integral the 'magic' diodes are to the sound of these circuits, and it's really down to personal taste. We no longer have any stock of BA282, MA856 or 1S1588. We'll supply 1N4148. There are lots of listings around claiming to be genuine sets if you'd prefer to source some for your build

There's an optional 18V charge pump on board, and both circuits can be individually switched for 9 or 18V operation for more/less headroom. You can have mini slide switches or, or leave the charge pump out altogether if you prefer.

The original has internal trimmers for presence control, but we've given you the option to have these as external pots. It makes enough of a difference to make the extra knobs worthwhile in our opinion. These extra pots mean we've had to venture away from the control layout of the original a little. If you go for an 8-pot layout, all good. If you want trimmers for the presence controls your Tone pots are going to be towards the edge of the box rather than centered below your Gain and Vol. You do have the option of bending the Tone pot legs out of the way and wiring them to the PCB if you really want to centre them up - no harm done. Please choose the correct enclosure option. Type A for all pots external, Type B for internal Presence and board mounted Tone pots, Type C if you don't mind bending Tone pot legs and wiring them up.

The kit is supplied with vertical-mount pots which have round shafts, so you'll need set-screw fitting knobs.

Oh, and you can choose between normal True Bypass with 3PDT footswitches, or go for the daughterboard with our OptoPuss optical switching and those slightly softer DPDT footswitches. The switches mount on a separate daughterboard that neatly connects to the main PCB via header pins.

All this AND we've left enough space for a battery.

Please be aware that this kit requires quite precise enclosure drilling if you're attempting it yourself. We're supplying Lumberg KLB series jacks to make it easier to fit everything in.

Note: If you have both sides turned up to high gain you may get screeching when both are engaged together. This can be solved by putting the pedal after a buffer.

If you want the PCBs without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCBs, all board-mounted components (not footswitches or bypass-related components, or mojo diodes unless selected as an option), pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitches and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as a option with full kits, and will take a battery. Knobs are not included.

Builds are only available with full kits including enclosure and vertical-mount pots. Please choose appropriate knobs.

Appetite for destruction in a box 5 product stars
"I built this kit cause I was interested in the dynamics of the KOT and how a bluesbreaker style circuit would work with my JCM 800. Turns out for me anyway, the pedal pushed my amp into am early Slash style sound. I have the pedal set as standard one side as a clean boost and the other as an overdrive. The presence knob really helps dial in the high end from that album. I have opted to run the pedal in 9v mode. 18v didn't sound amazing to me. I wasn't expecting to find an AFD sound but I am very happy I did. Really nice kit and a lovely pedal. Highly recommended!" Olli - 30 December 2022
Pretty awesome overdrive here. 5 product stars
"I opted for the fancied mmmm r BA282 diodes, and wow this thing is a great overdrive. It s definitely on the cleaner side but honestly in a really good way, it gives you a lot of volume boost with minimal clipping, honestly which I really like! It s definitely more of a clean boost overdrive, but with both stomped on and maxed out it can get a good amount of loud searing gain." Adrian Amador - 22 September 2022
Just wow!! 5 product stars
"All I can say is Wow what a pedal and it is firmly on my board. This is the 6th FuzzDog pedal I have built and as always easy to put together and great PCB and components. Take your time lots of components!!

Excellent quality kit, favourite overdrive yet 5 product stars
"I've built a few fuzzdog kits now, and they've all been excellent. Really cannot fault the quality and service. Ordered this but used some different diodes that I'd sourced from elsewhere (1S1588 and MA859) rather than the ones sent with the kit. I haven't A/b'd them against the 1N4148's so I don't know how magic they actually are! But, I can honestly say I've never played a better overdrive. I currently run mine at 18V both sides, with one side running the first diodes and one side running the second, and it gives you everything from the slightest hint of classic tube-like breakup to a full, thick overdrive when both sides are combined. Tone knobs give a really useful sweep, and the external presence controls are useful to dial in a bit of extra cut when you need it to suit different amps/setups (although I've never run mine higher than about 8 o'clock yet). I also really appreciated how little off-board wiring there is with this kit. Was really nice to put together, and feels solid as a rock. Just follow the instructions carefully when fitting pots, headers, daughterboard etc and it'll go together really easily.

Believe the hype, just don't buy into it 5 product stars
"Fairly easy and straightforward build, just be aware that the fit in a horizontal 1590BB is rather tight (a vertical 1590JJ will give you plenty more room, at the cost of not that much more pedalboard real estate), but in all fairness, off-board wiring is down to an absolute minimum on this one. Sounds brilliant, lots of possibilities through stacking both sides, there's hardly any setting that I couldn't find a use for. The presence controls are a nice addition, they complement the tone knob pleasantly, and installing them will literally set you back the couple of quid that the two potentiometers are worth. This is a really nice, versatile OD, and if you are not willing to shell out the absurd amount of money that these go for on the used market, nor are you to sit through the 3 year waiting period to get a brand new one from AM, this is a complete no-brainer." - 05 July 2021
Great layout, PDF instructions, and awesome sounding! 5 product stars
"This is my first pedal I've put together and very glad I went with Fuzzdog! Wanted a KoT pedal for a while but not with the 2 year wait (!!) and also been wanting to make a pedal so after listening to a demo of this clone decided to give this a go. It sounds awesome! Considering my prior electronics experience is only really installing pickups in my guitars and adding some treble bleed caps here and there it was really straight forward. Fuzzdogs layout and PDF are very good, highly recommend. Prob took around 3 hours to solder everything and then another hour or so to put it all together. I have 5 gain/overdrive pedals now and this honestly might be my favourite. Sounds SO good!!" Hook - 01 July 2019
Awesome! 5 product stars
"Putting hype aside, there is a reason the 'original' of this pedal is so well known and this kit delivers the same tone. Like all FD pedals the kit is really well thought out, the documentation is great and the end result is brill. I went for the optional diodes and also the 18v Charge pump, both of which I recommend. A really transparent pedal that let's your guitar's tone come through and can go from super subtle to classic overdrive." Chris - 23 November 2018
Great kit!! 5 product stars
"Awesome sounding Pedal with great setting options. The manual is fantastic- so its not too hard to build. It took me about 3 hours and two pizzas. I recommend it!!" Kersten - 13 July 2018
This is the king 5 product stars
"Received this kit for my Christmas. Build took around 4 hours, took my time to make sure I got it right. Couple of questions later - fuzzdog are brilliant at getting in touch - and it's up and working. Lovely tone, especially when you cascade one side into the other. The level and headroom available at 18v is phenomenal. This pedal is inspiring to play." Andy C - 02 February 2018
