The mysterious and sought-after dirt box from the far east, famously used to good effect by Chris Wolstenholme. Now disected and demystified by Adam Crowell who kindly shared his findings.

Based around a Big Muff with a few tweaks and additions to work its magic. A pair of germanium cans up front give it a characteristic warm growl, setting it apart from most Muff-based offerings.

Bass is where it's at with this box. Of course you can use it with guitar but the low stuff is where this shines.

A note of caution - the Tone control on this works in reverse, so more a treble cut than a tone control. More caution - this is a NOISY circuit. Much noisier than a standard muff.

Not much more to be said really. You probably know what it is if you're reading this, and you probably want one.

Worth the hype? That's up to you...

You have the option to go for vertical-mount pots that slot straight into the pcb (these have a round shaft, so take that into consideration when buying knobs - you'll need some that fit with a grub-screw).

Supplied with AC128/AC176 for the germanium pair, not NTE102/3.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is only available with full kits, and will not take a battery. Knobs are not included.

Difficulty: Medium

PCB size: 50 x 60mm

Knobs required: 3

Enclosure: 1590B

Noise 5 product stars
"The pedal produces a very strong noise. You can not use it due to the strong noise." Franz - 06/09/2017
Wonderfully Angry Distortion! 5 product stars
"If you don't know what this is, a quick search for Crowella clone will provide all of the information you need. I liken it to a fuzz, but a fuzz that's high on synthetic cathinones and driving a Lamborghini. Very edgy. Almost rodent like... but different. I love it! It's a straight forward build but pay close attention to the orientation of the transistors. Also, be advised that this is a high gain pedal and it comes high gain pedal noise. The original tracer (Crowella) has since added a noise suppression circuit which is not present here. I wouldn't call this a flaw, but let it serve as a warning to those who may not know what the side effects of high gain pedals are. Mine is tended to by a Decimator II G String, which works perfectly. If you're looking for the tone that this particular circuit provides, this kit will absolutely take you there. The only other viable option I've found is the product offered by Crowella himself. I'm sure his improvements to the circuit and quality of work is worth every bit of the asking price, but for me Fuzz Dog's kit provides exactly what I needed for a lot less scratch."
