Axis Fuzz

Jimi used one on the title track of Axis Bold As Love. What else do you need to know?

Oh go on then. The Fuzz Face's more sophisticated big brother. Richer, fuller fuzz with more bottom end and even more responsive to playing dynamics and guitar volume.

This baby can cut through a band for biting solos, but doesn't get too messy when used on chords. Perfect all-rounder really.

Uses all-silicon transistors so is much more stable and predictable than its sibling. It'll sound the same in the heat of that sweaty venue as it does in your chilly rehearsal shed.

Board-mounted pots for minimal wiring and easy enclosure mounting.

If you want the PCB without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as an option with full kits, and can take a battery if desired with footswitch positioned 22mm higher, closer to the controls. Knobs are not included.

Builds are only available with full kits including enclosures. Please choose appropriate knobs.

Very versatile always on fuzz! 5 product stars
"First build success! I have some electronics background and the instructions were on point. Great sounding pedal through a slightly dirty marshall type amp. Cleans up very well.

Purple Axis 5 product stars
"This is the first pedal I ve tried to build and so glad I started with it. While it s pretty simple circuit wise, it s a great for getting you familiar with all the extra bit that you could take for granted. I made a few mistakes along the way and had a lot of learnings, which was exactly what I wanted. Initially I was not that keen on the tone, however I then followed the recommendation to remove R8 and C7. What do you know fixed it! Now I can honestly say it just nails that Hendrix sound, better than a straight up FuzzFace. This is a gate way drug if ever there way one.

A steep curve... 5 product stars
"My first pedal build, and it works!!! As a complete novice to anything electronics based this was a challenge... Testament to the Fuzzdog literature however, without a challenge we learn nothing! A very steep learning curve for me, I learned a lot from this little project and am eager to hone my skills and knowledge further now. Many thanks Fuzzdog" Paul - 03 July 2023
Axis fun fuzz 5 product stars
"This axis fuzz was my second build. I screwed up the placement of the resistors and sadly my first attempt did not work. I contacted FuzzDog and asked for replacement in my latest order which they kindly supplied. I finished the pedal last Sunday and it works great. Sounds awesome and it s a great feeling to get it to work. Totally recommend this kit" Dominic Edwards - 07 September 2020
Amazing sound and super easy to build 5 product stars
"Finally managed to get a kit to work! It actually worked on first try and it took less than two hours! This thing sounds amazing. It just has all the vintagy fuzz vibes I could dream of. I was considering going for a silicon Fuzzface, but decided to go this direction and I love it." Pablo - 15 July 2020
Mostly Frustrating. 2 product stars
"After 3 weeks of trying to get this pedal to work I've given up. Unless you're an experienced builder, don't waste your time with this kit. If you're not experienced with reading resistor codes then you're screwed. Half the resistors don't match up with the resistors in the picture. Only three of the resistors in the picture have an orange stripe. Six of the resistors I got have an orange stripe. None of the resistors in the picture have a white stripe. One of the resistors I got has a white stripe. Every resistor in the picture has five stripes. Half the resistors I got only have four stripes. I think it's reasonable to expect when the build difficulty says 'easy', that it's easy, not half guessing if it's correct. Mostly I'm just frustrated. Waste of my time and my money." Exceeded all expectations - which were high already 5 product stars
"Bought one but it was my first pcb ever as had only ever done work on guitars. Didn't work but great practice and very worthwhile. Bought another and got it working no problem. Sounds absolutely fantastic and had lots of fun getting it together. Will buy all my pedals here from now on." Will - 23 May 2020
Replaced a far more expensive pedal in my rig 5 product stars
"My first attempt I made a mistake so had to reorder the board and components. After I figured out where I went wrong, the build was a doddle. Great vintage fuzz tones, and incredible overdrive when you back off the drive knob a bit. I run this into a single channel Marshall just on the edge of breakup, and running this with volume hitting the front pretty hard and my word. Easily one of the best fuzz pedals I ve used, and super dynamic. This has taken place of an Xotic SL Drive as my primary drive tones, that s how much I like it." Callum - 26 April 2020
Killer Hendrix tone ! 5 product stars
"My 2nd build ! Tested with few guitarist friends, this tone with a Strat ! Killer ! Does not works so well with bass however. Even with a blender." Vali - 16 December 2019
Classic Fuzz, Easy Build 5 product stars
"This was my first Fuzz Dog build. Easy enough for a novice. The board mounted pots and the Direct-Connect made the wiring a snap. Socketed my trannies to avoid any heartbreak my substandard soldering might bring. This is definitely the Axis sound. Sings nicely with the gain dimed. A bit of a strange decay at times, but this is a fuzz after all. Chords stay nicely coherent, even at full gain. Very handy and useable fuzz." Patrick T - 30 October 2019

"my second kit . ive learnt so much from this and the Brian May treble booster. (even worked out the resistor values ). i read all the instructions for the mother and daughter boards twice ,then took my time , still made a couple of mistakes but i worked my way through them ,a multi meter is essential . both pedals perform brilliantly especially the Axis Fuzz, really happy with the end result , great fun experience building them .... what to get next ?" john gundy - 18 September 2019
Great fun, even better sound! 5 product stars
"Amazing speedy service. Blown away at how fast the order was processed and sent out. The instructions provided had the right leve of information. It never felt like it was hand holding, but I did learn a lot as I went along. Having not picked up a soldering iron since secondary school (give or take some guitar wiring), this was a perfect beginners project to get my mojo back. Circuit worked first time (amazing feeling). Had some problems with the switch, but after re reading the instructions and engaging some common sense and a multimeter, I was able to quickly fix the issue. The effect itself sounds great and does exactly what it says on the tin. Summons the crackle and fizz of the late 60s perfectly. Looking forward to road testing with my band. Very impressed and looking forward to my next kit and project!" DaveT - 13 September 2018
Does anyone have instructions 2 product stars
"Can't put it together for lack of knowledge/instructions. Can anyone help?" Leyland - 17 October 2017
A thing of beauty 5 product stars
"Timely delivery, all there & well packed. Not my first kit and this board has solid traces unlike many other offerings. Good instruction; these old eyes were slow with 4 and 5 color resistors codes ugh. Built and tested as suggested and worked first time. I overlooked the daughter board LED connection so I had to run an LED wire from main board (should update the instructions) This kit is a good solid build that will be on my pedal board next to my 3 fuzzaround clone. Aces!" Max L - 01 May 2017
You need one of this 5 product stars
"After my BMP triangle version, I decided to go for a different flavor of fuzz. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much of it, just curious about its sound. Bought one, enjoyed the build and there I am, surprised with the result. As with every kit sold, instructions are fantastic, components are high quality, price is great and the result is wonderful. If you are looking to get into Hendrix territory this is a must. Cleans wonderfully using your guitar volume and it sounds huge but not crazy when cranked up. After finishing it I wasn't able to put it out of my pedalboard, so there it is after several years. One of the few pedals that I have no intention to replace." NiLace - 18 February 2017
Beautiful, Nasally, and cutting 4 product stars
"This is THE pedal for people who either A. Love Jimi Hendrix's 1970 tone, B. Love Fuzz, but want to cut through the mix (Wherein other fuzzes are simply too mid cutting to shine), or C. Want to have a nearly transparent fuzz. Starting on point A, I love the Isle of Wight tone. I also love John Frusciante's tone, so I stuffed this thing in front of my Crybaby. Perfect. On B, this thing sounds so much more powerful than a Fuzz face simply because of the fact that it maintains the midrange of your guitar tone. It reminds me of what happens if you stack a Tubescreamer or a Boss DS-1/2 in front of a mid-scooped fuzz. It cleans it up, but changes the entire characteristic to a much more nasally sounding tone, perfect in my opinion. On C, if you turn your guitar volume down to about 7, Boom, distortion. 5? Overdrive. 3 and you've got your original guitar tone back. This thing colors tone less than a Fuzz face, and even in the ways it does it is more satisfying as it peaks at the mid-low range more, which gives a girthy sound at lower volumes, and a cutting tone at higher volumes. The only reason this review is 4/5 stars, is that when the fuzz is turned all the way up, it makes this terrible scratching/broken pedal sound, which I think is just due to some odd resistances in the transistors I got. Turning it down from max seems to fix this, and it sounds just like I expected. (PS, it sounds best at higher volumes, and with a crunchy tube amp). Overall more than worth it. Inexpensive, relatively easy kit, compact, and a brick of tone." Mylo McCormick - 17 January 2017
Axis and You Shall Receive 4 product stars
"I play this through a Lazy J 20 and it sounds divine. Leaving out the 2 components gets rid of the nasty splutter you hear on almost all the Roger Mayer YouTube demos. My only niggle is that I would like a pot for the smoothing cap. Apart from that this is a great pedal and even with the removal of said 2 components it gets fat and fuzzy when cranked Thanks fuzzdog" Rik - 25 November 2016
Buy it just buy it! 5 product stars
"Dude! THANK YOU! I've received my axis fuzz today. A breeze to play and the sound is GORGEOUS!!! Like a fuzz face on steroids, seriously, it's exactly what I expected, sputtery but not muddy, tons of gain and sustain, clean well with guitar volume pot, wow just wow! you rock! ciao! Listen to Hendrix at the Isle of Wight to get an idea of what this pedal can do. Forget about fuzz faces or big muffs, this kit ended my quest of the perfect fuzz!" Vince Marcoux - 30 April 2015

"Just finished my first pedal kit and got to say really impressed with Axis Fuzz. Have built a few guitars and amps over the years so used to a bit of soldering and found the PDF easy to follow. I tried the pedal into a couple of tube amps with several guitars and loved the sound. Not too mental a fuzz, just right. Sounded brilliant with a soul food before it as well. Looking forward to my next kit." Mick - 03 April 2015

"This is the second pedal i have built from poodle's and i must say that it has been a joy to build everyone,The kit was purchased and delivered in 24 hrs "That's Quick" super quality parts throughout with an easy to follow parts pdf. What can i say except this pedal rocks big time through the 18watt plexi with either single coils or humbuckers i just run the pedal flat out and control the effect with the guitars volume lovely:)will be back for more...Thanks!!" "Just completed this pedal, it sounds fab and I cant wait to play it loud at practice. I have to say that the aftersales service is brilliant. I had very rapid responses to all my email queries. I'm sure I'll be buying lots more kits in the future." Big Dan - 11 April 2013
Man this fuzz is nice! 5 product stars
"Don't be put off by the low price and tiny board dimensions - this thing rocks! VERY nice fuzz tones and even with the knobs cranked it's way quieter than a B s pedal, I thought it was dead until I hit a note! Just wind the fuzz to eleven and control the clip with your guitar volume. Awesome!" Buzz - 03 December 2012
Axis Fuzz Review 5 product stars
"Very professional kit with parts of the highest quality. Worked first time. It could be called "Really Big Bits" because thats what you get with 5th chords on the three bottom strings! As the circuit stands the LED is a bit dim because the power has to go through R4 180k before it gets to the LED limiter resistor R12 2.2k. No problem, just dont put R12 on the board but put one leg on the 9v connection on the external power plug and the other to the longer lead of the LED. The shorter lead of the LED goes to the switch as shown. Slip bits of connection wire insulation over any exposed wire especially near the switch. Its now as bright as the other Poodles. Its easier than having a long wobbly lead from the pdb to the LED anyway!" Keith Roberts - 08 October 2012
Nice! 5 product stars
"Yup, sounds just like the fuzz of Axis bold as Love! I sprayed it orange, used an actual Axis bold as Love CD cover for the graphic, and sprayed over that with clear lacquer before attaching the parts. And I have to say it looks and sounds sweet! Poodle scores again!" azoora - 18 August 2012
Great Fuzz 5 product stars
"This Fuzz Delivers, bought it as a first attempt at building a 'bigger' pedal and it was a really fun build. The PDF file was a great help in working out how to create the pedal and all the parts are top notch! I'm going to keep buying more! If only for the fact you can get great sounding pedals at 1/8 of the price and you feel more attached as you've created them yourself! Give it a try!" George Wharmby - 26 May 2012
