Range Master Germanium Treble Boost

NEW VERSION IS AVAILABLE - This version has been retired.

The Dallas Range Master. Bedrock of so many classic tones. Beautiful germanium treble boost. The originals used OC44 transistors, but they're as rare as a coat on a night out in Newcastle, so we'll offer a selection of cans as and when we have them available. They'll all offer their own unique character to this little gem, so why not try a few to see which you prefer? Now also availalble with no transistor in case you've sourced your own little beauty.

PNP (positive ground supply):

  • 2N404
  • AC128

If you can source a NPN transistor with low enough leakage you can make yourself a negative-ground version, but here at FDHQ we're all out.

Board-mounted pot for minimal wiring and easy enclosure mounting.

Multimeter recommended for optimal biasing, but it can be done by ear.

Combine with a Power Pump kit if you want to power your PNP configuration on your standard polarity daisy chain.

If you want the PCB without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as an option with full kits, and can take a battery if desired with footswitch positioned 22mm higher, closer to the controls. Knobs are not included.

Inspired by: Range Master

Difficulty: Easy

PCB size: 30 x 22mm

Knobs required: 1

Enclosure: 1590B

Direct-Connect compatible (4-way)

If you want the kit pre-built you must add the enclosure option below and select your knobs in the Components section. Check Specials for powder-coated enclosure availability.

Good fun - very glad I built this one! 5 product stars
"I built one of these, then fiddled with it to get it exactly to my liking. It's a quick and easy build, and I find it works well into a crunchy overdrive. It's less a treble boost, more a boost-everything-apart-from-the-bass, adding a little bit of germanium 'grit'. If I roll back the tone controls on my guitar a bit, I can get a sound a bit like a Tube Screamer but more 'open' and less compressed. There is a bit of hiss, but nothing I can't live with. There are some tonal similarities to a germanium Fuzz Face's 'clean' with the guitar volume backed off. One observation - with the supplied audio-taper potentiometer, you need to turn the boost potentiometer up past the middle to get a boost. It will boost your signal, but the useful bit is probably the top third of the dial. I rebuilt mine with a linear potentiometer, giving unity gain nearer 9 o'clock and some useful stuff round the middle of the dial. (It doesn't make any difference at all to the range of sounds.) However, your mileage may vary!" Daniel A - 10 December 2020
Classic boost 5 product stars
"I've built this classic boost about 4 times before over the years, from DIY etched PCB, to vero, and now Fuzzdog PCB. I've never been hundred percent with the default spec treble boost(personal taste), and was clued back in the early noughties, how this was the stomp used by Iommi. Fast forward to about 2012/13 ish, and I finally read, trawling the web, that his was modified. So that reinstated my interest in this must have for late 60s acid pyche blues vibes. I've sice previously made the DAM Red Rooster, and the ThroBak Strange Master. For some daft reason, I accidentally threw away the Red Rooster circit board, which to my taste is me fave. So thanks to FuzzDog, rather than faff with a vero build again, I bought the ready made PCB, and adapted the build to Red Rooster spec. Great service and products FuzzDog." Woody - 19 May 2020
Great little kit 5 product stars
"This is the second time I have built this kit, once as a complete beginner and this time now that I sort of know what I am doing. Both times were a breeze and this time I did the input capacitor mod (adding a couple of different input capacitors wired up to a switch to turn the pedal into a full boost). Would thoroughly recommend for a beginner, sounds killer too!" Andrew - 17 December 2019
Great first build 5 product stars
"This was my first pedal build and I'm hooked. The Fuzz Dog kits are great and the support is excellent. I found the stock version of this one had a bit too much treble for my taste and setup, so I changed C1 to 10nF and it's perfect. An awesome vintage growl and sparkle and it sounds amazing with fuzz pedals. Thanks Fuzz Dog!" Vance - 15 April 2019
Vintage mojo - you know you need one! 5 product stars
"Built one a while ago with an extra switch for choosing different input caps (4n7, 10nF, 27nF). This box transforms an otherwise clean-ish amp into a monster rock tone. Luckily I had an AC176 going spare, so it plays well with my daisy chain power supply. This one's a keeper. Cheers fuzzdog!" Ian - 29 October 2018
Easy build with incredible tone! 5 product stars
"I added the Charge Pumped Daugherboard for a PNP build. It was a easy build that took almost no time to put together. Like all Fuzzdog kits there is no noise. It has a great tone that is as good if not better then high priced boutique range masters." Rich S - 28 March 2017
Don't be put off by positive ground! 5 product stars
"I'll just begin by saying that this was my first positive ground effect, and I've built many effects over the years (some with pcb's from the Dog!). The normal "Boss" style of powering effects has became a habit, so this took a little thought, but it's simple really. This was my first full kit from Fuzzdog, although I've had pcb's and trannys from them in the past. The quality of everything is amazing. The sound? AWESOME! Feed it into a cooking amp, and it's probably the only pedal you will ever need! It just does SOMETHING to the notes, makes them sing! Thanks Fuzzdog!" Matt Lowe - 15 February 2017
Vintage awesomeness! 5 product stars
"Just amazing. I built this to brighten up my home made 5E3 Deluxe, which it does beautifully. Get the drive just right and it gets the first stage preamp tube (12AY7) singing like a bird. Simple and so effective. I did have a meltdown when first assembling, due to incorrect orientation of the PNP transistor. Fuzz dog HQ, were more that understanding and sent me a new set of components, which went together perfectly,me end though the fault was all mine. If you have an old valve amp and want to get it singing, this is the pedal you must have." Dave - 14 January 2017
great pedal, great support 5 product stars
"the pedal sounds great and fuzzdog's support is always faster than light! I've done many fuzzdog kits, all great kits. maybe the led-bezel could be better." giorgio - 22 October 2015
Awesome vintage sounds 5 product stars
"I just finished this pedal it sounds great. I has a real 70s vibe to it, it makes my guitar sound like Clapton's on the Rainbow Concert album." Big Dan - 07 May 2013
