1978 IC Big Muff Pi V4-5

Hot! 1978 IC Big Muff Pi V4-5

The daddy of thick, meaty fuzz. Everyone needs some Muff in their life.

This circuit is the V4-5 (V5 was a V4 + tone bypass switch - you can make either). A 70's experiment in emulating the Big Muff Pi tone using op-amps rather than transistors resulted in this babe. It came kinda close, and in the process became its own sought-after sound. Similar territory to what you'd expect from a BMP, but with a heavy, grungy tone.

Check out the characteristic sound of it on Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream

Pads included to make modifications suggested by AnalogGuru, which make it slightly crunchier, but it sounds great stock. Don't mess!

For a great read on all-things-Muff head over to Kit Rae's Big Muff Page.

All this fuzzy fun in a 1590B enclosure. Fat muff in a skinny body. Sweet.

Optional tone-bypass switch is board-mounted for minimal wiring and easy enclosure mounting. The board is designed to take vertical-mount pots (round shafts, so you'll need knobs with set screw fitting), but you can wire in normal ones if you prefer.

Kit includes: PCB, all components, hook-up wire, 3PDT footswitch for true bypass, jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, LED. Enclosure (pre-drilled) is optional and will not take a battery. Does not include knobs.

Difficulty: Medium

PCB size: 50 x 40mm

Knobs required: 3

Enclosure: 1590B

Direct Connect compatible (4-way)

If you want the kit pre-built you must add the enclosure option below and select your knobs in the Components section. Check Specials for powder-coated enclosure availability.

At last, a Big Muff for keeps! 5 product stars
"Had a couple of different versions of BM's previously and never really got on with them. Just didn't have that sound in my head that I was looking for. Well thats no longer the case! This version is awesome!! Sounds really nice and thick with chords without losing any definition (my main complaint about most Muffs)and sustains forever. I fitted the tone bypass switch but didn't bother with any other mods. The standard circuit sounds so good I don't know why you'd want to change it! Did I mention this pedal is awesome....thanks Poodle (again)." Simon - 20/05/2013
