Super Skwisher - Ross /Dynacomp/Boutique Compressor

NOTE: the build doc still shows the pre-LM13700 version of the PCB. It'll be updated at some point. The BOM is identical. Follow that, not the pic. Sorted.

All new, all singing and dancing version of the Skwisher with multiple options.

**Now configured to use either the original CA3080 IC or the more readily available, non-counterfeit LM13700. Both sound identical.**

The mighty squashing goodness of the Ross Compressor. The sustain just goes on and on.

Build the stock two knob version or add an optional board-mounted toggle swtich for the Mark Hammer variable recovery mod - well worth it.

If you want even more tweakability you can build the 4-knob version, adding pots for Clip and Attack as well as the stock Level and Sustain controls.

Compression isn't top of the list at FuzzDog HQ, but after wiring this up and plucking a few clean notes the room was filled with chiming tone akin to Mark Hollis' later Talk Talk sound. Outstanding!

Note: the 4-knob version requires 150KB pots. We ain't got any. Kit will be supplied with 250KB for these controls, which gives you more adjustment than is entirely necessary, but that's better than not enough. You have the option to put resistors in parallel with the pots to get them to 150K, but that changes the control taper. It's up to you which way to go. If we can source vertical-mount 150KB in future we sure will.

The kit is supplied with vertical-mount pots which have round shafts, so you'll need set-screw fitting knobs.

If you want the PCB without parts there's a link for that at the bottom of the page.

Partial kit: PCB, all board-mounted components, pots.

Full kit: As above, plus footswitch and appropriate daughterboard/components for your selected bypass type (see Downloads section for details of those), jack sockets, DC socket, battery snap, hook-up wire, LED.

Enclosure (pre-drilled) is available as an option with full kits, and will not take a battery. Knobs are not included.

one step closer to pink heaven 5 product stars
"I'm another firmly in the "who needs a compressor" camp, but when you're building a complete(?) gilmour pedalboard it's unavoidable. still working out just how much this thing can do, and what the extra switch does, but as kits go, this is probably the easiest I've ever built. I usually make a cockup somewhere, but it's almost impossible with this kit! if you don't have a compressor, and you're looking for one, definitely recommend grabbing this kit" Chris G - 24 February 2024
Two knob comp has been my go-to since 2014 5 product stars
"This review's a long time coming. Built this in 2014, and it's been on my board ever since for gigs and recordings. Pairs beautifully with a Strat and recently it's been getting love with my Gretsch with Filtertrons too." Josh - 01 February 2021
Everyone should have this 5 product stars
"This is the first compressor pedal I've ever owned. I know how crucial the effect is when producing but never realised just how effective it can be in a pedalboard. It is extremely versatile and clean. The Skwisher ranges from a very subtle compressor to extremely compressed sound. It just adds punch to the tone and makes it cut through. I've built the 2 knob Mark Ross version with a switch. Haven't fully figured out what the recovery switch does exactly but I assume it's something to do with the volume. The build was easy enough although it did not work on the first try. READ THE DOCUMENTS FULLY. My mistake was the connection on one of the potentiometers I didn't include. This is definitely the pedal that will almost always stays on all the time." Vid - 15 July 2019
MXR Clone nails it 5 product stars
"My second Fuzzdog build and it didn't disappoint. I needed a compressor to achieve those chiming notes that Gilmour has when playing Syds Theme in Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Working in a PF tribute, I wanted to go analogue, even though I have a compressor on on multi-FX I wanted old school so bought this. It's a revelation,I built the basic Ross/Dynacomp pedal and the notes go on for ages... In true Spinal Tap fashion, the sustain lasts forever. These are grea kits, so much so that I've bought another 3...... That'll keep me busy for the next week or so." Andy B - 10 June 2019
Sqwisher 5 product stars
"I am usually slow with reviews but now I felt I need to write one too, because I am so happy! This was my 7th kit and, so far, I had troubles with most of them -because I am too lazy to READ the BOM properly! Some builds also were a bit tricky in the details, and I needed some guidance. The good people from FuzzDog were always very helpful and quick with answering. This is something I like very much and it is a total commitment and a deal maker. I ve been looking for other options too but always came back to the nice Northeners. This build I messed up totally and got desperate because I couldn t find out what was wrong. Of course you can not expect much help with a case where literally everything could be wrong. But they are indeed happy to help if you come up with a little troubleshooting work by yourself and ask specific questions. They do whatever they can. I found out that I mixed up 2 resistor values and could finally swap them. Now it works like a charm - like all of their builds." Matt - 06 October 2018
Great pedal 5 product stars
"My first attempt of building a pedal, and what a easy job...and what a great pedal. Never thought I needed a compressor, until now. Will definetly order more from the Dog" Stian - 14 February 2018
I don't need a compressor? 5 product stars
"Compressor? I don't need a compressor? Turns out I used to think that because I didn't have one and now I regret to buying one of these before. Long transparent sustain, note clarity and what's most important to me, the ability to set it up right with different guitars. Don't have a lot to compare with but this pedal is everything I expected and above. As always, easy instructions, high quality parts and easy to build." NiLace - 18 February 2017
Great kit, top price. 4 product stars
"A compressor might not be the sexiest pedal, but it was first on my list and this kit hasn't disappointed. Instructions were easy to follow, and really simple to neatly fit to the small enclosure with the direct connect daughterboard. Sounds great too, evens out my sound, and sustains for days when cranked. Small point of criticism - the board is labelled with positive signs for the caps, which go to the square pads, but for diodes, the cathodes (negative) go to the square pads. Not a problem if you RTFM, but oddly inconsistent. Slightly bigger criticism - the 500k pot had a shaft that was too girthy for the hole I wanted to stick it in. It tried various lubricants in vain, and eventually it took me 20 minutes of filing with a metal rasp before I could cram it in there." Gareth - 17 November 2016
fantastic pedal, great support 5 product stars
"the pedal sounds fantastic and fuzzdog's support is always faster than light! I've done many fuzzdog kits, all great kits. maybe the led-bezel could be better." giorgio - 22 October 2015
Great compressor 5 product stars
"Not usually one for using compressors on guitars, but wanted this to add sustain to dreamy bottleneck stuff. Used a Dyna Comp in the past and got rid of it because it just sucked up everything. This one though, with the Mark Hammer mods, can be dialled in exactly as you want. Instructions easy to follow as always with FuzzDog!" Xavier - 23 June 2015
Skwisher 5 product stars
"Got this kit off eBay not made up, and it was a joy to make. I haven't made a board for a long time but this went very well. Good wiring diagrams all works just keep a good eye on soldering its a small board. But I am very pleased to announce a working kit. Full of tone and true bypass. I will be ordering another kit this week. Cheers Fuzzdog. You rock my tone." Neil Quarrell. - 08 March 2015
Great Kit 5 product stars
"Excellent kit, I ordered mine with the optional switch and enclosure pre drilled. All in all it makes for a very enjoyable build which went smoothly apart from a dyslexic moment where I soldered r12 in the r21 position. Oops. Well thought out pcb and well made. A pleasant evenings work to build the electronics, a week struggling to finish the box to a reasonable standard." Martin - 12 June 2014
A must have 5 product stars
"This my very first build of a pedal ever. It wasn't hard to do, instructions easy to follow and with a little bit of double checking and multimeter checking I had it done quite quickly . Results are fantastic and well worth the effort and certainly well worth the price. This is now in my pedal set up permanently. There is nothing to beat this thing unless you want to pay three times more for a boutique comp. Serious sustain and serious levels too. First class!" Noel - 14 March 2014
My first full build... 5 product stars
"I've done some mods and fixes in the past but this was my first full build done from the PCB (I had most parts already). The PCB itself is fantastic quality, very clean and professional. Simple, concise instructions with some really hand hints and tips along the way. I had one issue, when i didn't notice I had put in a 47R instead of of 47K, whoops! Can't blame the poodle for that one eh? The Mark Hammer mod is great too, lots or variation and was exactly what I was looking for. SSSSKKKKKWWWWIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" Joe Dorcia - 14 March 2014
Awesome! 5 product stars
"Fast attack, long release, makes your funky dead notes come alive. I've never used the original Ross compressor, but I'm very impressed with this kit. Once you've tweaked the internal pot, the full range of sustain is usable from a gentle leveling to full on 'Did I wire that right?!' evil." Ben S - 19 January 2014
Great Compressor kit 5 product stars
"Fantastic simple compressor that does exactly what it should." Big Eck - 19 March 2013
